Symbols in Invisible Man
Abstract
Invisible Man is the representative work of American black writer Ralf Ellison. It is a novel using many symbols. It describes the process how a young African-American in the 1930s strives for freedom and seeks for his identity in the society dominated by the white. This thesis mainly analyzes the symbolic meaning of the three images: “colors”, “visual sense” and “objects” in Invisible Man, revealing the fact that Afro-Americans are invisible in the white dominated American society. Although Afro-Americans play an important role in the development of the American society, they are also neglected.

摘要
《看不見的人》是美國黑人作家拉爾夫•埃利森的代表作. 它是1部高度象征性的小說，描寫了在210世紀310年代白人主宰的社會中1個非裔美國人如何尋找自我身份和如何尋求自由以及想要被白人主流社會接受的過程.本文主要通過對作品中使用的3種意象“色彩”、“視覺”和 “物質”的象征意義的分析,探討了作者如何使用象征手法來揭示非裔美國人處于白人為主流的社會中被看不見的事實,指出盡管他們在白人為主流的社會中起著舉足輕重的作用,但是仍然受到忽視。
