一：by turns & in turn
1. by turns 意為“輪流”、“交替”。如：
We did the work by turns. 我們輪流做這項工作。
They laughed and cried by turns. 他們一時哭一時笑。
2. in turn 意為“依次”。如：
We will cross the bridge in turn. 我們將依次過橋。
They answered the teacher’s questions in turn. 他們依次回答老師的問題。
二：turn down & turn up
1. turn down 表示“關小”(收音機等的音量)，turn up 表示“開大”(收音機等的音量)，是一組反義詞。如：
The TV is pretty loud. Can you turn it down a little? 電視機聲音太大了，能關小一點嗎?
I can’t hear the radio very well; could you turn it up a bit? 收音機我聽不太清楚，你把它開大一點行嗎?
2. turn down 還可表示“拒不接受或采納”。如：(from www.yywords.com)
He asked her to marry him but she turned him down. 他叫她嫁給他，但她拒絕了他。
3. turn up 還可表示“赴約”、“到達”、“出現”、“(被)找到”、“查閱”等。如：
He turns up late for everything. 他干什么都遲到。
For some reason he didn’t turn up. 由于某種原因他沒有來。
Turn up the dictionary if you can’t spell the word. 這個詞如果不會拼，可以查字典。
三：turn in & turn into
1. turn in 意為“上交”、“上床睡覺”。如：
Turn in your homework, please. 請把家庭作業交上來。
We turned the thief to the police. 我們把小偷交給警察。
We turn in at nine and get up at six. 我們9點鐘上床睡覺，6點鐘起床。
2. turn into 意為“(使)成為”、“翻譯”。如：
Water can turn [be turned into] ice. 水可以變成冰。
We must turn grief into strength. 我們必須化悲痛為力量。
Can you turn it into English? 你能把它譯成英語嗎?
四：turn off & turn on
turn off 表示“關掉(收音機，電燈，水龍頭等)”，turn on 表示“打開(收音機，電燈，水龍頭等)”。如：
Turn off the light before you go out. 出去時請關燈。
Please turn on the radio (the music, the water). 請把收音機(音樂，自來水)打開。
注：有時用作不及物動詞。比較：
I can’t turn off the tap. 我無法把龍頭關上。
The tap won’t turn off. 這龍頭關不上。
