詞根：tain,ten= to hold, to keep 抓住，保持
1. contain
助記：con(一起)+tain (抓住)→抓在一起→容納，包含
釋義：vt.包含，容納
舉例：
Our range of herbal teas contain no preservatives, colourings or artificial flavourings.
我們這一系列的藥草茶不含防腐劑、色素以及人工調味品。
2. detain
助記：de(向下)+ tain(抓住)→把某人扣下→拘留，阻留
釋義：v.留住，阻住;耽擱;拘留，扣留
舉例：
The act allows police to detain a suspect for up to 48 hours.
該法令允許警方將嫌疑犯扣押最多48小時。
3. maintain
助記：main(=mani=hand，用手)+ tain(抓住，保持)→用手抓住→保持住，維持
釋義：vt.保持;保養;堅持
舉例：

4. entertain
助記：enter(=inter在……中間)+ tain(保持)→在大家之間保持愉快的氣氛→招待，使快樂

5. sustain
助記：sus(=sub=under在……下面)+ tain(抓住，保持)→從下面抓住→支撐，使保持
釋義：vt. 維持;支撐，支持
舉例：
Their defense markets are too small to sustain economically viable production runs.
他們的國防市場太小，就經濟可行性而言不足以維持生產。

1. closet
助記：clos(關閉)+ et(小的…物)→封閉的小空間→小房間，壁櫥

助記：dis(表示相反的動作)+ close(關閉)→打開→暴露，揭露

發言人拒絕向新聞界透露公司收購的詳細情況。
3. enclose
助記：en(=in在內)+ close(關閉)→關在里面→圍起來
釋義：vt.(用墻、籬笆等)把…圍起來;把…裝入信封;附入

請隨信寄來一個貼好郵票的回信信封。
4. conclude
助記：con(加強語氣)+ clud(關閉)→結束，下結論
釋義：v. 得出結論;結束;推斷出
舉例：
(1) So what can we conclude from this debate?
那么從這場辯論中我們能得出什么結論?
(2) If the clubs cannot conclude a deal, an independent tribunal will decide.
如果俱樂部之間無法達成協議，將由一個獨立的仲裁委員會來裁定。
5. preclude
助記：pre(=before前，向前)+ clud(關閉)→在進入前關閉→阻止，妨礙
釋義：vt. 阻止;排除;妨礙
舉例：
(1) We try to preclude any possibility of misunderstanding.
我們努力排除任何誤解的可能性。
(2) Their move does not preclude others from investing..
他們這一行動并不影響其他人進行投資。
6. exclude
助記：ex(外面)+ clud(關閉)→將……關在外面→把……排除在外
釋義：vt. 排除，不包括;排斥;驅除，趕出
舉例：
(1) Further examination is needed to exclude the chance of disease.
需要進一步檢查以排除患病的可能。
(2) The university had no right to exclude the student from the examination.
